The Gem Project News: Updates, Magazine Feature & IYC Event

Hi Friend,

Good morning,  can you spot me above?  On behalf of the Gem Project, I visited the International Youth Council, an alumni organization of the Youth Assembly at the United Nations, last week. It was truly refreshing to see youth contributing at this fund-raiser, in hopes to change our world. It was an honor to experience this and listen to the panel of Ambassadors to the United Nations, which included: H.E. Ambassador Abdulkalam Abdul Momen, H.E. Ambassador Josephine Ojiambo, and Mr. Patrick Hayford–director of the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa.

Earlier that week, we had a meeting with Ambassador Ojiambo about our autism quilt initiative. Kate Calabro recently published an article about the quilt in Rutgers Magazine called, “What a Gem.” The article itself is on page 76!

We plan on gifting the featured quilt in the magazine to Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration this spring.

Prior to meeting with IYC, we had a chance to catch up with the team at Mentoring USA that night too.

That same week we had a meeting at the Family Success Center of Newark Now. The center’s director, Ms. Chesha Hodge, is doing an excellent job. We commend her efforts, along with the work of their President, LaVar Young.
Where do we go from here? We’re ready to work harder! In fact, we have been planning for several upcoming events. February we are starting our interactive literacy programs back up again. We need volunteers who are free during the week between hours of 3:30-5:00 PM to help with our “Public Speaking: Speech & Debate Series.”

Remember how that series went last year? Check it out ( here ).
