We have been in partnership with Newark Youth One Stop Career Center for the last 3+ years, offering high school and college age youth summer jobs as paid youth organizers.
Our mission at The Gem Project is to boost student engagement and on-time graduation, through a peer-based fellowship that is centered on youth organizing, workforce development skills, and service-learning initiatives that takes on a social justice approach. We have been doing this work for the past 15 years, and our fellowship model has been around for the last 3 years.

The Group Interview itself is designed in a way that allows us to get to know each other as people. It is also an opportunity for us to see if you may be best supporting other program sites, due to skills shared and/or your responses submitted in the pre-interview activity, in step #1 (tab #1).
In preparation for the group interview, please review information about Newark SYEP sites you’re being considered for. If your initial preference has changed, feel free to state so by emailing project@thegemproject.org.
The Gem Project: Education, Social Justice, Advocacy, Arts and Activism:
At The Gem Project, youth will engage in organizing tactics across education, justice, and health and will involve themselves in the action component of the organizing cycle. Over the course of 6 weeks, youth will organize and express themselves in subgroups centered on: 1) visual art, 2) brief/town hall, or 3) launching a radio broadcast network. For the health equity component, they’ll focus on reproductive justice within the LGBTQ+ communities through a partnership with Planned Parenthood and local LGBTQ+ organizations.
Exponentially Well Institute for All, Inc.: Healthcare and Engineering:
The Exponentially Well Institute For All Inc. (EWIFA), is a health promotions organization which mentors adolescents who are interested in integrating healthcare careers with an understanding of scientific data statistical analysis. The “STEM Projects in Healthcare for Adolescents”, designed and delivered by EWIFA, will be a six-week enrichment program which targets high school students who are interested in pursuing professions in the health care field. The program will emphasize student creativity and development of a solutions based prototypical medical device, which will be conceptualized using the Engineering Design Process (EDP). Steps of the EDP will be taught during the program.
The Opportunity Network: Summer Science Research Program
The Opportunity Network’s Summer Science Research Program (OppNet SSRP) aims to create a collaborative research community where underrepresented students can develop foundational scientific research skills while amplifying their own and each other’s voices. Throughout the six weeks of OppNet SSRP, Fellows acquire fundamental research skills to prepare them for future laboratory science work. OppNet SSRP Fellows craft their own Research Questions, then find and use scientific empirical studies to investigate their chosen fields of inquiry, all for the end goal of creating a Research Statement and Research Project of their own design. OppNet SSRP Fellows craft Research Statements to document their research findings and future goals, and Research Projects to communicate those findings to an audience of their choice – one for whom their research can have immediate, real-world, positive impact.
