Last night, I was learning about drug design and dose-response relationships in my class at UMDNJ. I reflected on the wealth of opportunities that are available for our youth today. Becoming an AFNA scholar in 8th grade allowed me to become a “college student” for a set period of time,  while feeding my interest in the sciences. Shortly after that my high school biology teacher, Ms. Joy Clark, recommended me to the pre-medical honors program at UMDNJ, during my sophomore year. It’s opportunities like this that allow our youth to see themselves outside of  what they feel is determined to be their future, they are the ‘innovators’ of it.
Our young leaders have the power of changing the world and their own lives because someone or something believed they could.

It is with great pleasure we forward the following opportunities presented to us, from our friends at Adrienne Nicole Productions and Mentoring USA respectively. We hope that you can change a student’s future by passing the following information to schools, students, friends, and colleagues.

Program Description
Imagine getting the chance to develop a commercial product to help solve a real problem facing our world today. The Spirit of Innovation Challenge is an annual competition for high school students, inviting them to use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to develop the innovative products of tomorrow. Along the way, we match teams with world-renowned scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs as mentors to assist teams with advanced STEM and business principles. Student teams will compete for awards and recognition including a chance to attend the 2012 Innovation Summit at the NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California where they will present their products and vie for $5000 seed grants, patents and commercial opportunities. Additionally, this year, three teams will travel to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, a conference that only occurs once a decade. To enter, students register online, form a team of 2-5 students, create an innovative product and submit a one-page abstract. This year, the Conrad Foundation is looking for innovative ideas in three categories – Aerospace Exploration, Clean Energy and Health and Nutrition.
